De meesten associëren de naam van Mark Taimanov met de 6-0 nederlaag in zijn tweekamp tegen Bobby Fischer in Vancouver in 1971, maar hij was natuurlijk meer dan dat. Decennia lang was hij een vooraanstaand schaakgrootmeester.

In het kort beschrijft hij zijn eigen schaakcarrière als volgt:

“As a player I have competed almost all over the world, winning several dozen major international tournaments, I have held the titles of Russian champion and Soviet champion, I was twice a candidate for the world championship, I have won the world championship for students and twice for seniors, and with the USSR team I was four times champion of Europe and an Olympiad champion. ”

Inderdaad een indrukwekkend schaak CV.

Wat misschien niet iedereen weet is het feit dat Taimanov naast een rijke schaakcarrière ook een erkende concertpianist was, met groot succes oefende hij parallel twee beroepen uit.

“I have often been asked how, during the course of decades, I managed to combine successfully two such difficult and contrasting professions – I said that I did not mix my performances, but alternated them, and when for a long time I was giving concerts, I was resting from chess, and when I appeared in several tournaments in a row, I was resting from music. In short, my life was one continuous rest…”

Mark Taimanov: een groot schaker, erkend pianist en een bijzonder mens is er niet meer. Hij werd 90 jaar oud.

Tot slot zijn partij tegen Matanovic in het Stockholm Interzonaal Toernooi in 1952. Deze partij kreeg de speciale ‘brilliancy’ prijs.
